What should I know before getting a certificate in web design?

I’m sure you can learn how to do webdesign without a degree but it takes a degree to land a really good job. Most large design companies won’t hire you unless you have a degree and some talent for being very creative. Web design is incredibly hot right now since a lot of companies are switching to web for fast information. If you’re just working from home, I’d get some books on how to use the programs in order to make the site function as well a book on HTML codes. Webdesign can be incredibly complicated and exceptionally time-consuming, especially if you want to do cool things like Flash, which is usually taught in colleges. Most webdesigners i know use Adobe Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc….books are a good aid in learning but as far as becoming highly versed in it, you might want to check out and see if community college offers a night class or something. You can learn the programs but you have to have a knack for creativity and patience. Good luck!!

I have been involved with web creation/for the last 2 years and have pretty much learned everything online via forums and other educational websites. I am not the best designer out there but I can create a decent looking website. My main place of education was the digitalpoint forums. This is probably one of the largest web design sites in the world and has a mountain of info. Check out the DP forums below and also one of my websites I created.
If I were you I would try getting some certificates from along with a design certificate. If you know HTML, CSS, or PHP I would highly recommend getting one since it looks good on a resume. Many clients want web designers to know basic languages like HTML and CSS (php isn’t really a requirement so you can ignore that one).
I think it’s about $15 for the digital one and $50 for the framed one sent in the mail. Good Luck!!!
